On 2 October 2025, ARC UI took part in the research workshop “Insights from Contesting Hegemony: Labour, Ideology, and the Limits of Resistance in Post-Authoritarian Indonesia.” The workshop was conducted with organisational support from Go South 2025, Universitas Gadjah Mada.
Diatyka W.P. Yasih, Hari Nugroho (Universitas Indonesia), and Vedi R. Hadiz (University of Melbourne) presented insights from their individual and co-author ongoing and published works. Muchtar Habibie (Universitas Gadjah Mada) served as the discussant, offering critical reflections and extending the analytical debates. The session was chaired by Luqman-nul Hakim (Universitas Gadjah Mada), ensuring a productive and engaged scholarly exchange.
The speakers collectively argued that Indonesian labour is not only politically marginalised but also ideologically fragmented—shaped by a constellation of moral grammars (Islam, nationalism, entrepreneurship) that obscure the structural roots of inequality.
The papers presented in the workshop collectively sought to move beyond methodological nationalism by connecting Indonesia’s labour struggles to global political economy. In doing so, they revealed how ideology is inseparable from its material underpinnings—embedded in the everyday relations of work, class, and social reproduction.
