This research report was initially developed as part of the collaborative, inter-disciplinary research organised by the University of Nottingham, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and Universitas Indonesia (UI) funded by the United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) Global Research Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) throughout 2020. At the centre of the research project was the endeavour to find more sustainable energy alternatives for Indonesia’s transport system, which also considers the social conditions of people—and their relationship with land use—in places where such energies are sourced.
It is hopefully the first of many publicly-available regular reports to come from the Asia Research Centre, Universitas Indonesia, that investigate and problematise resilience and inclusive governance in different yet interconnected localities within the relationship between people and nature. As such, we look at natural resources and technological innovations as material symbols that unpack larger social issues pertaining to the effects of unequal development in select Indonesian localities.
It is our hope, through this report, that critical social research become accessible to a wider readership. We publish our reports in Indonesian and English, firstly so that Indonesians can better evaluate the social conditions in which we live in comparison to other countries, and secondly for our international partners to better understand where Indonesians are currently and how our experiences relate to broader global changes. If material conditions permit, the findings could resonate and become recourses for likeminded actors to contribute in widening the social space for local communities to mainstream more sustainable practices of making do.
